The style of parenting adopted by parents will positively and negatively impact on the relationship with their dependent and the roles that they take on. Most of parents will use a combination of styles involved in parenting as different situations and different ages of the dependent can influence what style they adopted. The styles of parenting can have positive and negative impact on the roles of a parent such as satisfying the specific needs of the dependent, building a positive relationship with the dependent and promoting the wellbeing of the dependent. According to Diana Baumrind a developmental psychologist she believed that the type of parenting style a parent adopts will have developmental impact on the dependent. Her research on 100 preschool age children during 1960s, using naturalistic observation, parental interviews she concluded that there were four types of parenting styles.
These parenting styles included:
- Authoritarian
- Democratic
- Permissive/Indulgent
- Negligent
