This style of parenting is characterised by parents being controlling in all decision making. There are strict rules that the child if expected to conform to. Some of children have of authoritarian parents have poor decision making skills due to the lack of opportunity to develop these skills. They may either make poor choices or rely heavily on their parents to support them in making life decisions due to being told what to do all the time. This style of parenting prevents a dependent to be creative and use their imagination to solve problems to develop.
This parenting style has negative impact on the roles of the parent as it prevents a parent from satisfying the specific need of sense of identity of their dependent as they are always told what to do and what not to do. This parenting style doesn’t allow a child to gain their own interests and dislikes hence they may not understand who they are due to confusion as they conform to parents expectations. However a parent of a 5 year may use this parenting style to discipline their dependent and hence it positively impacts the role of the parent in satisfying their dependent’s specific need of health. For example a parent may have strict rules on what the 5 year old can eat and what they can’t eat. This prevents the dependent from eating junk food and eating nutritious food just as fruits and vegetables that supports the dependent’s development and reduces the risk of obesity and being overweight.
A parent always telling their 3-5 year old dependent what to do all the time and not listening to their opinion can have negative impact on the roles of the parent building a positive relationship with their dependent and promoting their dependent’s emotional well-being. Due to the parents adopting an authoritarian parenting style the dependent may feel as though their parents are the “villain” and does not love them. This creates a barrier between the parent and dependent due to lack of understanding between the two and the lack of communication. As the parent expects the child to do what they say and not taking the dependent’s consideration results in lack of bonding and affection. Hence this negatively impacts the child’s emotional well-being as the parent isn’t able to show love and care which a child desperately needs. Due to their authoritarian parenting style a parent isn’t able to fulfill their role of building a positive relationship and promoting the dependent’s emotional well-being. Conversely authoritarian parenting style can also have positive impact on the roles of parents building a positive relationship and promoting their dependents physical well-being. For example the parent may have strict rules to teach their dependent self-discipline and maturity so that the dependent respects their parent’s values and respects their physical environment such as taking care of their toys and not drawing on the walls or breaking equipment. Parents may also have strict physical activity schedule that promotes the dependent’s physical well-being as they engage in activities every day for 15 minutes so that the dependent maintains their physical health.
