Building a positive relationship with the dependent is an important role a parent must fulfill as dependents develop the skills they need to succeed in life. Early parenting and child relationships have great impact on the emotional well-being of the dependent. By parents showing affection towards their dependent it demonstrates to them they are cared for and feel that they are important. Young children are egocentric where they believe that everything revolves around them and hence it’s important for parents to place all their attention on their child as its part of their development. Therefore it’s important for a parent to fulfill their role of building a positive relationship with their dependent as their dependent tries to understand the world around them through their parent. For example it is important for a parent to model appropriate behaviour around their dependent as their actions will influence their dependent’s behaviour. If a parent models behaviours that reflect good morals and values it increases their chances of fulfilling their role of building a positive relationship with their dependent as their dependent is surrounded in an environment that teaches them about love, care and respect, which are elements that contribute to making a relationship positive. It also leads to parents teaching self-discipline to their dependent as positive behaviour will enable a dependent to understand what is right and wrong. Parents can also build positive relationship with their dependent by prioritising time and showing interest. With newborn dependents parents spend greater time with them as they are constantly being cared for due to their young age. However as dependents grow to the age of 4-5 parents doesn’t spend as much as dependents don’t need constant support. It is important that parents allow their dependent to be independent as it allows them to develop as they use their brain to solve problems and learn from their mistakes. Parents should also note that showing interest towards their dependent is important as they feel valued and loved which positively impacts their emotional well-being. Conversely it should be done to a certain extent as over complimenting them and praising them builds over confidence, which leads to problems as the dependent will believe that they are perfect and can’t be wrong.
